On 8 September 1965, the foundation stone for the temple was laid by M. Bhakthavatsalam, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, at a function held under the presidency of Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri, then Prime Minister of India. On 7 June 1973 the main temple for Lord Swaminatha – Sree Swaminatha Swami Temple – was consecrated and a Mahakumbhabhishekham performed.
