History
Vasant Vihar has been inhabited in some fashion right from the times of the Lodhi dynasty (15th century) and possibly earlier as well. We know this because Vasant Vihar is full of monuments dating from that period.

Konarika's Story
Lalit and I got married in Jan 1971 and that was also the year when construction began of our family home “Konarika”.
Lalit’s father, Mr.J.C.Mathur’s play, ”Konark”, was already well known and ours was the “kone wala ghar”… so “Konarika was an obvious choice for our house!

My Tryst with Vasant Vihar...
Buying or being allotted a plot of land was for our parents a life-changing occasion for them. During their lifetime everything they did was targeted towards building their own homes, every penny saved was going to be spent on either on their daughter’s wedding or on building a house. Only now when we look around we realised as to how well they had planned their lives at a very young age.

Building a Community...
I have been a resident of Vasant Vihar since 1971, living in our lovely house built by my father way back in 1967. Given our long association with VV and my experience of working with government and political leaders, some senior residents of the colony asked me to get involved in helping the community.

Timeline
A Chronology of Events in and around Vasant Vihar
This timeline captures the evolution of Vasant Vihar over a period of 50 years, from a simple colony of retired government officers to the cosmopolitan and upscale locality of today. It is possible to see Vasant Vihar’s development in a few distinct phases.
1960’s – Vasant Vihar Housing Society was formed and in 1967-68 the first few residents began to construct their houses.
1970s & 80s – The colony was fully settled with the basic infrastructure of markets, schools, medical facilities. It was a simple and gentle way of life during this period.
1990s – With the onset of liberalization, Vasant Vihar was transformed into a buzzing destination with exciting new options for shopping and entertainment. Several global and Indian brands were launched from the neighbouring Basant Lok Complex. With the steady influx of expatriates and MNC professionals, lifestyles started changing as did the character of houses.
Post 2000 – The surge of consumerism and development in the area started putting a strain on the colony’s resources, with water, traffic, environmental issues becoming growing concerns. This in turn also galvanised citizens to take up new initiatives to conserve water, greenery, habitat and heritage.
